Gastronomy, wine & local produce

Christophe's Ideas and suggestions to make the most of your holiday

Burgundy is famous for its wines and gastronomy and the region offers so much for those keen to explore, discover and learn more. The 'density' of the villages and their vineyards, the number of local markets and great restaurants, and the quiet country roads, make it easy to pack a lot into a single day's touring. The difficulty will be choosing where to go and what to do ! The sections toward the bottom of this page present a wide range of suggestions related to wine and gastronomy, but we'll start with some great ideas as a taster to whet your appetite !

• Book a chef to come and cook for you at the Château

Having just extolled the virtues of the region, let's start right back at the Château ! There is probably no better way to become more acquainted with the regional culinary delights than having your own personal chef cook for your group.

You will have a front row seat to watch the chef cook ! Getting first-hand information and being able to see, smell and hear (the latter being an oft-forgotten cook's skill) will give you a great insight into traditional, or more high-level, cooking techniques. You will learn so much more about Burgundy cuisine and what to look for in the local markets should you be tempted to cook a regional dish yourself.

We have three recommended chefs who offer their services at our Châteaux : Chef Thomas, Chef Agnes & Chef Raphaël (not all are available at every château). You can find out more in the 'slides' just below this intro-section or go directly to the info pages here :

Here for Chef Thomas
Here for Chef Agnes
Here for Chef Raphaël

• Local markets

Local food markets are vibrant hubs of tradition, offering a deep insight into French life. They showcase seasonal produce, artisan cheeses, fresh breads, and regional specialties, reflecting the unique character of each area. They are not just places to shop but social gatherings where people meet and connect with local producers. A cherished part of French culture, these markets play a key role in preserving culinary traditions and are vital for supporting the local economy.

Of course, after shopping, it's almost 'de rigueur' to have coffee on a café terrace, watch the world go by and appreciate one of life's simple pleasures.

See the sections below for the 4 main 'Local Producers' markets in the region : Beaune, Chalon-sur-Saône, Louhans and Tournus. The Local Services page for each Château has further information on smaller markets near to each castle. Please be aware that local markets are generally held on only one day each week, so be sure to check the info.

• A magical day in the Côte de Beaune

Here's an example of a great way to spend a day…

- Immerse yourselves in the world of wine at Olivier Leflaive in Puligny-Montrachet, with a guided visit of the vineyard and winery along with a tasting session.
- Have a gourmet lunch at one of the vineyard's two on-site restaurants : restaurant Klima (gastronomique) or Le Bistro d'Olivier (top-end 'bistro').
- Spend the afternoon visiting the famous Hospices des Beaune and/or the Château de Savigny-les-Beaune with its incredible collection of fighter jets, Abarth cars, motor-bikes and lots more !

See the section 'Côte de Beaune Tour' below.

• Bike tours through the vineyards

Bourgogne Evasion offers half-day and full-day bike trips through the vineyards of the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits, with tasting stops at the winemakers. If you're not using the spit bucket at the tastings, please remember that 'efficient' cycling generally requires that you stay upright ;-)

See the section 'Wine-tasting bike tours' below.

• The Tournus - Cluny Tour

A great suggestion if you like a mix of history and gastronomy :

- Visit the beautiful Abbey of Tournus
- Have lunch at the Michelin-starred restaurant “Aux Terrasses” in Tournus
- In the afternoon you can choose and mix from three options for continuing the tour :

- the medieval village of Brancion
- the superb Château de Cormatin, in Cormatin
- the beautiful medieval city of Cluny

See the section 'Tournus-Cluny Tour' below.

Below you will find many other suggestions for recommended restaurants, winegrowers, local producers, etc.

Some notes concerning my suggestions below for visits to wineries

Most of the 'great' wine producers I buy wine from (some 25 vineyards or so) sell on an 'allocation-only' basis, such is the demand; in other words, bottles are reserved for restaurants and individual wine lovers who are on their 'lists'. I am lucky to have obtained such 'favours' ! These vineyards do not sell to the general public and therefore do not welcome the public for vineyard visits and tastings.

'Quel dommage!' as we say in French ('what a pity!'). However, you have the chance to taste some of these exceptional wines from the elite Burgundy producers by joining one of the tasting experiences I organize for my Kasteliades guests. Please contact me for more details at christophe@kasteliades.com

My suggestions for winery visits 'by appointment'…

The producers I have selected in the sections below welcome the public by appointment. To book a visit you will need to contact them by phone or e-mail. Start with a simple 'Bonjour' and introduce yourself as a Kasteliades guest and you will be sure to receive a warm welcome.  The tastings at vineyards are often free of charge (sometimes there may be a small fee), but wine producers, in general, expect that you will buy some wine from them. It's a perfect example of 'Buy-Local / Short-Circuit', a far better way to stock up for your holiday at the château than buying wine in supermarkets !

Please contact the different providers directly to book a visit. To receive a special welcome, don't hesitate to say that you were recommended by Kasteliades. Please note that we do not offer a reservation service on your behalf.

'Rue des Vignerons' is a very useful website where you can easily organize your reservations at a good selection of wine producers who welcome the public :
www.ruedesvignerons.com

Beyond my suggestions…'Free-style' visits

Most people coming to Burgundy for the first time think they need assistance, or a company, to organize a wine tour for them, but that's not always true. Many wine producers are used to having people knocking at the door without an appointment. It's not uncommon for Burgundy wine villages to have more than a hundred wine producers, many of whom would love to welcome you, so there are great opportunities for 'unorganised' visits.

Please avoid visits on Sundays and at lunch time, winemaking is hard work and the 'vignerons' deserve their rest !

Wine-tasting bike tours Bourgogne Evasion takes you for a great fun tour by bike in the Cote de Beaune & Cote de Nuits vineyards.

Organized bike tours with a guide on the Côte de Beaune & the Côte de Nuits

The proposed hikes take place over a day or half a day.
I know... You think that cycling and wine tasting at wineries are not compatible activities... or maybe you are not in the sporty enough mood to commit to 26 km of cycling. Yet I can assure you that this concept is very nice (and particularly suitable for the less athletic among us :-)! The trick, for example, is that a minibus from Beaune takes you to the highest point of the mountain of St Romain, so your route is essentially composed of gentle descents… easy!

Florian & his assistants, your friendly tour guide!

Florian is a qualified cycling guide. He is from the region which he knows very well. Florian is also fluent in English. He is a very nice and friendly person. His enthusiasm will help you spend an unforgettable day! Florian also has very good knowledge of Burgundy wines and tasting techniques, he will be a valuable guide during your stops in the cellar.

Book as soon as possible. You benefit from the “SUN GUARANTEE”.

If two days before the date set for the excursion day, the weather forecast is very unfavorable, then the date will be postponed in the following days or canceled at no cost to the client.

Children / teenagers

Children are admitted from 10 years old. Specific bikes are provided.
A reduced rate is provided for children and teenagers between 10 and 16 years old inclusive. Very young children, who can sit in a baby chair on the bike, are also allowed. Please specify the age of the children when booking.

Advantages reserved for Kasteliades guests:

- All Kasteliades guests benefit from a 20% reduction on the prices of all excursions offered by Bourgogne Evasion on the Cote de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits.

Local producers market In Chalon sur Saône

Each sunday morning from 8am to 12am, the "place St Vincent" in Chalon sur Saône welcomes a market gathering exclusively local food producers such as jams, honey, fruits, vegetables,etc..

This "Place St Vincent" is one of the nicest area of Chalon, with its cathedrale and wanter fountain. I highly recommend you to visit this market, since it is at the begining of your holiday with us, it will be a good opportunity to fill up your fridge with hiigh quality local produces.

marché Beaune

Local producers market In Beaune

Every Saturday morning, from 8.30am to 12am. In the heart of Beaune. You can take the opportunity to visit the famous “Hospices de Beaune”.

Marché Louhans

Local producers market In Louhans

The market in Louhans takes place every Monday morning, from 8.30am to 12.30am. It is the biggest and most popular market in the whole region of Burgundy. Some people drive all the way from Switzerland to visit this market. In the summer it can attracts about 20.000 visitors.
The main pedestrian street is a classified historical monument with its 157 arcades. The market is divided in 2 sections, one with local producers and other stalls (in the Arcades street), and another part (on the market place) where farmers sell their alive animals (ducks, chickens, rabbits etc..) which is great fun for children.

Important advice: Arrive at the market before 8.30am (!!) and park just at the entrance of Louhans (coming from the North 100 meters before the roundabout, just after the Peugeot garage, there is a small parking place on your right, coming from the south park before the railway bridge). If you arrive after 9am, you will be stuck for a very long time in a huge traffic jam, and you will not find anywhere to park. So go early or don’t go !

Lunch : The restaurants in Louhans will be totally packed at lunch time and they will mostly serve a limited choice of dishes (all featuring “veal’s head” which is the local specialty but most non locals will not like it). So I recommend leaving Louhans to take lunch outside. Going North: “L’Eden Bar” in Simard is 10 minutes from Louhans. They make great pizzas and homemade burgers, as well as a menu of the day. Book your table (it is fully booked every Monday) at 0033 385 72 28 16.
If you prefer a more “exclusive” type of restaurant St Germain du bois (10 min from Louhans) features two very good restaurants:

This is my favorite Michelin Starred restaurant in the region. The Chef (Jean-Michel Carrette) is brilliant, the service is perfect, the wine card is one of the best in Southern Burgundy at very reasonable prices compare to other Michelin starred.
This restaurant is highly popular and needs to be booked in advance. Recommend yourself from Kasteliades for the warmest welcome.

Cote de Beaune

Côte de Beaune Tour A day around Gastronomy, wine and history

1°) Olivier Leflaive in Puligny-Montrachet is a well-known wine producer of the Cote de Beaune. They have their own particularly good restaurant in the center of Puligny-Montrachet offering a great concept of lunch combined with tasting of their wines and visit of vineyards + winery.
You can book this complete experience for 130 euros pp (in 2020). Available every day except Sunday & Wednesday. Or you can also just go there for lunch. (All details on their website).

9H45 : Meet at Olivier Leflaive restaurant. Guided walking tour among the World Heritage listed “climate” of Puligny-Montrachet (vineyards) accompanied by Oliver Leflaive Sommelier.
The sommelier will explain Terroir, Geology, climate, classification, viticulture in Burgundy...

11H20:  Guided visit of the winery with explanations on harvest, fermentation, barrel aging and bottling. A glass of wine is offered during the visit (which you can keep and take away as a souvenir). Very often the winery commented visit is done by the owner himself.

12H30: Lunch + 6 wines at Olivier Leflaive restaurant. You can buy their wines to take away if you wish after lunch.
This package must be booked in advance. Recommend yourself from Kasteliades for the warmest welcome.

2°) After lunch drive 12 kms to the Hospices de Beaune (in Beaune).
Famous for their auction of wines each year in November, the Hospices de Beaune is, with its marvelous varnished colored tile roof, one of the most famous sites to visit in Burgundy. Apart from its own history, which is fascinating, the Hospices de Beaune also houses some very fine paintings.

2, rue de l'hôtel Dieu,
BEAUNE

www.hospices-de-beaune.com

3°) Conclude your day on the Côte de Beaune with a visit of the Château de Savigny les Beaune, 5 kms from Beaune.
14th century mansion, the castle of Savigny les Beaune, its courtyard and its park, propose to you several museums in one! Hundreds of models: Abarth race cars, motorcycles, fighter jets and helicopters alongside the theme of firefighters, that of straddle tractors or that of wine and wine equipment …You can even taste the wines of the estate in the vault of the Little castle!
The website of the Castle does not give much information, but this article is very good.

Enjoy a great wine-tasting with our friend François Raquillet One of the best producers of the Mercurey appellation

François Raquillet is the neighbour of our Kasteliades property in Mercurey and we are good friends. Amongst the over 100 producers in Mercurey, François Raquillet’s wines  are some of my favorites. François is a very friendly man and he is really invested into quality for his wine domain. Hundreds of my guests have visited his wine cellar these past years and have enjoyed the quality of his wines. According to the “Hachette Wine Guide”, François Raquillet is one of the best wine producers of the Mercurey area, he also has a good collection of wine fair medals and prizes from throughout France…A wide range of Mercurey (village and Premier crus) are available as well as a Rully White.

Good local food secret places... The art of

I thought I should write a section on my website to put together some good adresses for those who appreciate buying good quality food away from supermarkets. Burgundy has a slogan : The land of good food and good living  !
Simard, reknowned village for its high quality Bresse Chicken !
I strongly recommend all our guests to organize a visit to Simard at the begining of your stay with us. Simard (71330) is only about 20 minuts from Lans or Saunières, and about 45 minuts from Mercurey.

Mairet. "Bresse worlwide known chicken"

The Chicken of Bresse is an "appellation controlled" produce and is worldwide known. The "Mairet" company in Simard collects chickens which are breed in local farms in very strict quality conditions, and they prepare them to sell to high quality restaurants and food stores throughout France and Europe.

Mairet have a "desk" where local people can come to buy their chicken. They have a wide range of produces around poultry (turkey, duck..ect) but you should ask at least for a "Bresse Chicken ready to cook" (poulet de bresse prêt à cuire) and if you have children ask for some homemade chicken nuggets !

Open from Monday to Friday 8am to 11.30am and 1.30pm to 5pm, also open on Saturday morning from 8am to 11.30am.

The «Restaurants Street» In Chalon sur Saône

The « Rue de Strasbourg » in Chalon sur Saône (address for your GPS) is located on an island surrounded by the river Saône. Local people call this street « The restaurants street » because there are no shops but about 30 restaurants one after the other, of all styles. I can recommend personally « Le Clown Gourmand », for their « original » cuisine at good price. Also, worth visiting « Chez Jules » or “le Bourgogne”.
